Headshot Branding

 (AKA Your Anchor Image)

Your headshot is an essential investment in your personal and professional growth. I call your headshot your “Anchor Image,” because it’s often the first impression prospective clients, employers and audiences have of you.

  • Camera-ready makeup and hair

  • Wardrobe styling for one outfit

  • One profile-sized image

HEADSHOT Branding Session Process

Pick out what you’ll wear for your session. Here are some helpful tips!

  • Wear form-fitting clothes—extra bulk won’t help you look your best.

  • Do not wear loud patterns—think subtle or no patterns. We want the viewer to connect with your eyes/face first.

  • Please make sure all your outfit options are ironed, clean, lint-free, hung up and ready to go. Please double check your wardrobe selection for this.

  • Make sure to wear the correct supporting undergarments to help you look and feel your best for each outfit option.

  • Determine your 3-5 words that you want to convey with your image. Do you want to look fun, approachable, confident, intelligent, studious, academic, strong, happy, or something else?

  • Get a good night’s sleep.

  • Drink plenty of water.

  • Check your fingernails to make sure they are clean and camera-ready.

  • Exfoliate your face (use a washcloth if you don’t have an alternative).

  • Double moisturize your face (yes, guys, that includes you!).

  • Hair & Makeup: Please arrive with hair and makeup started (to the extent you are comfortable) and we will ensure you are camera-ready. Products with SPF in them are not good for photos and should be avoided.

  • Expect your appointment to last almost two hours.

  • Have your 3-5 words ready and make sure to convey to each team member.

  • My studio entrance is to the right of the garage. You’ll see an ‘Open’ sign.

  1. 5-10 minutes with Wardrobe Stylist, will help you determine which outfit/accessories that look best on you!

  2. 20 minutes with a professional hair stylist to get your hair looking great.

  3. 20 minutes with a professional makeup artist to get “camera ready.”

  4. 5 minutes of getting your portraits done.

  5. 5 minutes to review your images.

  • Go out on a hot date—you’re going to be looking and feeling fabulous!

  • You’ll receive your selected images 7-10 days after the session.

  • Post your new headshot to your Facebook profile, LinkedIn page, Twitter account and more. When your friends say “Wow!” please share us with them! We build our business on referrals.

  • Friend us on Facebook so we can tag and promote you on our social media outlets. Make sure to tell us how you want to be promoted.

  • Believe that You ARE Photogenic. Forget what your inner critic says. We know that is hard from years of self-talk. It’s time to change that dialogue.

  • Know the Camera L-O-V-E-S you OR Imagine that the lens is your best client. Welcome that client your eyes and your expression.

  • Let me know if you have anything you are super self-conscious about. It could be something I fix in the posing or later in Photoshop.

  • Know that the posing may feel awkward. Trust the process and know you will have a great headshot.

Know that if you don’t like your photo being taken, you’re not alone!

The vast MAJORITY of people don’t like how they look in photographs. There are many reasons for this. First, we’re very critical of ourselves. And second, most of our photographs are not taken by professionals.

You’re in good hands with me!

I’ll do my best to help you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. My goal is to take your very best photograph ever!

Did you know we have 48 muscles in our faces? That means infinite ways to express ourselves. So a few days before our shoot, practice smiling in the mirror. You’ll probably start laughing … and that’s okay. Laughter brings out great expressions!

Trust the process

When I’m behind the camera, I’m thinking about how to deliver your best photograph. And as a professional, I have many tools. For example … I’ll help you pose in a way that flatters you the best. I also may take many photographs of you, or just a few. The number of photos I take doesn’t matter. What DOES matter is giving you a winning image you can be proud of. So trust the process and get ready to look amazing!

Be ready to look at your images

If time allows, I’ll share with you the images I take for your review. I like getting real-time feedback from my clients. So if I ask you to come behind the camera to look at your images, be ready!

If you want to try taking a few more images and time allows, we will! I want you to have a photograph that you are proud of and represents you well!

Why looking at photos is different than looking in the mirror

The face you see every day in the mirror is flipped in photographs. That’s why it can feel weird looking at pictures of ourselves because we are used to seeing our mirror image!

That’s one of the many reasons I prepared this What to Expect guide for you. Most of us don’t get professional photographs taken of us every day, so we’re not “experts” in how we see ourselves in photographs.

Watch out for negative self-talk

Remember when I shared most of us are self-conscious about how we look in photographs? I’ll do my best to provide you an exceptional photograph, but it’s up to you to manage the “inner critic” who likes to pick apart everything: especially how we look.

And, did you know your brain processes images 60 times faster than text? That’s fast! People will get a sense of your image (first impression) and then move on. It’s important your image conveys the emotions of confidence, approachability, etc. In other words, YOU might stare critically at your image, but for EVERYBODY ELSE, they will see your beautiful face and then move on.

You have one chance to make a powerful first impression. Invest in yourself.

Other photographers view headshots as transactions. Not me. I know the power of an amazing headshot. That’s why I call your headshot your “Anchor Image.” I’ve had clients tell me that their headshot helped them gain the confidence to go after and get their Dream Job and win new client opportunities. Your headshot is that important.

Payment terms: I ask for 100% up front on my services, which allows me to commit my time to you and begin the pre-work necessary for you to have an amazing experience and set of images. Also, I engage my “Dream Team” to begin working on your behalf. In other words, there is a lot of pre-work that goes into your session! Hence my asking for 100% up front. I also do charge sales tax for my services. (Sorry! The government requires me to do so.)

Cancellations: You can cancel your service up to 48 hours of the appointment and get a refund, minus any credit card payment fees.

Rescheduling: Let me know at your earliest convenience if you need to reschedule your session. We’ll settle on a new day/time that works for us.

Single Headshot/Anchor Image Session Pricing: Most of my headshots are done during my Headshot Parties, which I offer multiple times during the year. But if the timing for the Party doesn’t work for you, we can schedule a session at my studio. There is a small price increase for having a dedicated session with me of $50.00, bringing the price to $445.00.

Additional Options: I try to bundle all my costs into one fair price for you to keep it easy for you. (Nobody likes to be nickeled and dimed.) With that said, many of my clients like to add additional services. We’ll go over additional options during the time of booking, but here are a few that many of my clients like to add:

Additional images (beyond what you’ve paid for): $150 per image

  • Additional subjects in the photos (such as business partners): $750 additional per person

    1. On location: A flat rate of $300 for locations outside my studio in the Richmond metro area

    2. Eyelashes $10 paid directly to Makeup by Holly
